The Weight of Impermanence
Mental health isn’t always tied to the mind. Sometimes it is tied to the state of one’s physical health and the ever-present question of, “What if…?”
There are people among us - friends, family, loved ones - who are only still here because they fight to be. These individuals combat the oppressive American health insurance system to ensure they see another day. And if the monetary well runs dry, they would become another casualty to a machine that is designed to eat people alive.
I connected with Grace about this piece to showcase her tumultuous relationship with health insurance regarding her state of heart failure. Her frustration with the way she has to navigate health insurance obstacles to keep her life-giving organ sustained is palpable, and translates into these frames.
For this piece, Grace and I (with help of her loving partner Graham) opted to turn the “eat the rich” moniker on its head; because in reality, the rich are eating you. We captured somber photos of grief and evil to show that Grace, and so many like her, are still here; still fighting.
